It irks me when people play games with their writing. It wastes the readers' time, turns them off to what one has to say, and creates idealogical warfares. Write clearly…for the readers. Sorry for this outburst. Let's speak (and write) so we can be understood. Our projects will benefit from that.

OK Hal
I agree
but why the outburst? why are you saying this now? rather than last week, last month or last year?
what got to you?
Alan
Good question. Thanks for asking. I was reading a post on a discussion group yesterday. One of the posters played a game with the wording of his comments. It created confusion for others. He thought it was hilarious. Not only did it distract from a serious conversation, it produced waste and ill will.
A lot of subject matter experts have a hard time saying and writing what they know, Hal being an exception to that generalization. That’s a good thing for me, since I make a living helping them find the right words and the right way to organize their thoughts. But I agree, trying to be cute gets in the way of being taken seriously. Creating ill will puts up a barrier to learning and understanding. The best writing is transparent.
