Meet the Godfather of Lean at IGLC-15
June 22nd, 2007 by HalSign-up for IGLC-15. The organizers of this year's IGLC have included a second industry day where they are conducting two ½-day workshops. The first workshop will led by Norman Bodek, Godfather of the lean movement. The second will be led by the TWI Institute. This is new for the IGLC community to include workshops with their program. And they're starting off with big guns.
Industry Day 2 will start with Norman Bodek delivering a workshop on Introducing kaizen in Business Operations. Norman is one of the most enjoyable people I know in a workshop setting. You don't want to miss him. He is the man that translated and published 100 Japanese texts that we now call lean. That includes the three books by Taiichi Ohno and the five books by Shigeo Shingo. He traveled to Japan more than 65 times visiting often with Ohno and Shingo. Norman was instrumental in establishing the Shingo Prize at Utah State University. He also published 300 other books on all aspects of becoming lean, productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and employee involvement. Norman is now on a mission to bring the magic of lean — fully engaging everyone in the workforce in working on themselves by making their work safer, easier, and more interesting — to every corner of industry. Don't miss this workshop.
QnEK and the TWI style of Job Instruction are making a very big difference for our clients.
During the lead up to WWII and during the war women moved from the home to the factory. The icon of that movement was Rosie the Riveter. The War Department prepared all the Rosies through the Training within Industry (TWI) program. That program was so successful that when it came time to rebuild Japan, General MacArthur brought the TWI staff to Japan. The result was a resurgence in the Japanese industrial economy. We've only learned recently that the TWI programs, Job Instruction, Job Relations, and Job Methods, are practiced by Japanese firms just as they learned them after the war. Toyota uses JI everywhere in the world just as they learned it over 55 years ago.
The afternoon workshop will be led Bob Wrona, Director of the TWI Institute and by Sr. Master Trainer Patrick Graupp. Bob will provide a background on TWI. That will be followed by the first two hours of the JI training. I will be joining Bob and Patrick at the end to explore the opportunities for bringing TWI to the project and AEC settings. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Bob and Patrick. It's hard to find two people more passionate about what they are doing than these two. And they are two busy people. Like others who can train TWI programs, they are booked solid late into the fall. Don't miss this workshop either!
Who should come to these two workshops? Anyone doing projects as their main work should come. While the overall week-long conference is on lean design and construction, these two workshops will address projects in general. I can tell you first-hand that both QnEK and the TWI style of Job Instruction are making a very big difference for our clients. This is perhaps the only opportunity you'll have to learn about them from the masters themselves. To sign-up visit IGLC-15 Registration.
