Projects at Home
July 13th, 2003 by Hal
I'm doing a small construction project with my three sons. It started when we tore out some really bad looking 40 year-old evergreen bushes. It is now well along to being an outdoor room. I didn't know what an outdoor room was until we started this project. My middle son is a landscape architecture student. He's got all kinds of ideas on how to dress up a traditional New England cape backyard.
This weekend we excavated a patio area and trenches for a retaining wall. Thankfully, my son works in the summer doing landscape construction, lot preparation, and underground utilities. He's learned to operate heavy equipment. Friday afternoon he showed up driving a diesel truck pulling an 18-foot trailer carrying a brand new skid steer (small front loader). In no time he graded and excavated. Then placed 6 yards of crushed stone. Still old Dad, who can't operate the equipment, did the trench work.
Good news for Dad, I'm travelling this week. I won't be back 'til midnight on Wednesday. With any luck the three brothers will set the retaining wall and be well on their way to having all the pavers placed. Unless Murphy rears his head again…the retaining wall delivery wasn't made last week as promised. You can bet I'll be on the phone helping that along.
In case you're wondering…this is just a story. No reforming posting today.
